Tell us who you are?
My name is Jeffrey Hermanto Halimsetiawan. I’m a hard worker and passionate about technology. I got the opportunity to be a MSP in my third year. Moreover, I have given more responsibility as a Microsoft Student Partner Lead for East Java region, Indonesia since November 2010. I have just graduated from Informatics Engineering Department – Faculty of Information Technology so currently I have to prepare my MSP candidate to replace me.
Tell us about your University?
Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember located in Surabaya is one of the best universities in Indonesia. University which is also known as ITS was founded in the year 1960. ITS has huge campus area. One of its campus, Sukolilo ITS campus occupies an area of 180 hectares with a total building area of approximately 150,000 m2. This university consists of 5 faculties and 2 polytechnics.
Tell us about your MSP history, when were you awarded?
I was given the information about MSP recruitment from my friend, Izzuddin Gumilar Aprilian who was also got that information from the previous MSP from ITS, Nofian Adi. Then, I sent the requirement document as requested by email. Finally, I was selected to be a MSP on March 2010 by Mr. Rachmat Wirasena (Former Academic Developer Marketing of Microsoft Indonesia).
What do you do in order to keep up with latest tools and technologies while focusing on your education?
I often read many tech blogs and sites so I can keep update with latest tools and technologies. Thereafter, I make some experiment with that technology because I have a favorite quote, “practice makes perfect”. I believe that I can get more experience with new technology by using it. I also love to write the result of my experiment in my blog therefore it can be helpful for the others.
What does being an MSP mean to you? and What makes you a great MSP?
Being an MSP has changed my life. I have the opportunity to get the latest Microsoft technology, share my knowledge to others and build wider connection. Students on our campus are unusual to share their knowledge about the latest technology, so I try to grow sharing spirit on my campus by conducting various events.
Tell us about faculty support in promoting tools and technologies?
Faculty of Information Technology which is especially Informatics Engineering Department gave enough support to MSP in promoting new tools and technologies. So, it’s not a big problem for MSP to hold an event about technology update with other students in my campus.
If you could ask Steve Ballmer one question about Microsoft, what would it be?
How can you build a great company like Microsoft?
Had a chance to attend “MSP Summit”? When and how was your experience?
Unfortunately, I never a had a chance to attend “MSP Summit”. That would be an unforgettable experience, if I attended it.
Who are your top 5 MSP’s from your country? and why?
It is really a very hard question to be answered because we have different way to do our role as MSP. All of them are great MSP for me.
What you think about the MSP’s role in promoting technology at your campus?
Most of the latest technologies weren’t used in academic life. Therefore, MSP have an important role to promote the latest Microsoft’s technologies and tools. We also have responsibility to encourage all of the students to join Microsoft Imagine Cup.
If you get a chance to suggest one conference in your Region? What would it be and why?
Windows Phone 7 Developer Conference because I do some explorations about Windows Phone 7 recently. In my opinion, Windows Phone 7 is very fresh and have a huge potential to grow up.
What is the best thing that has happened since you have become a MSP?
I have spoken in front of 150 people, lecturer and also a profesor
That was an unforgettable feeling.
Which was the last non-technical book you read?
Harry Potter.
If you could do so, how would you plan your academic studies differently?
Academic studies provide basic knowledge of all science is taught. Meanwhile, the practical skill can only be obtained through our experience of using a technology. Therefore, I like to do some research by myself.
If there was one place you could travel to, right now, where would it be and why?
Microsoft Headquarter in Redmond because I want to know how Microsoft takes care and manages its employees to maximize their productivity.
How can one be a part of MSP Club? Any suggestions for them?
You must have a passion about Microsoft’s technology so that it will drive you to do exploration. But, It’s not enough if your knowledge is useful just for you. You must have sharing spirit to share your exploration result to the others.

What are your future plans?
I am going to continue my Master degree study in overseas. Then, I want to work in information technology industry.
What two or three accomplishments have given you the most satisfaction? Why?
I was selected to be a MSP and revive activities of the MSP in the East Java region as MSP Lead.
Any Message you want to give to the readers of Shaikhjees?
The spirit of sharing is not a pleasure for every individual, but individuals who have a passion for it will be very helpful to others.
